With IDnow eSign, you can conclude legally secure contracts online
With IDnow eSign, you can conclude contracts with your customers online. The qualified electronic signature (QES) offers the same legal security as a hand-written contract signature.
Here’s how eSign works
Customer starts contract conclusion
Your customer decides to conclude your contract digitally. He checks the contract online and starts the signing process. This works conveniently from home or via a mobile device.
Legally secure identification via video chat
Our trained agents guide the customer through the entire video legitimation process. They verify the identity of the customer based on the identification documents via a live video connection. Pictures are taken of the front and back of the ID, and a photo of the customer is taken and compared to the ID data.
Digital conclusion of contract
The customer signs the contract with his/her electronic signature created in real time. Even during the signing, the user will be supported by our video agents in the event of questions.
We will transmit the results of the contract signing to you with the results of the personal identification via a data interface. You can start the customer relationship immediately.

eSign and qualified electronic signature (QES) - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is an electronic signature?
With the help of electronic signatures it’s possible to sign documents, for instance contracts and powers of attorney, online and without paper. That way, the user is not subjected to time-consuming steps such as printing, signing and sending the document via post.
With the QES of our cooperation partner DocuSign IDnow fulfills the requirements for qualified electronic signatures (QES). This highest security level of electronic contract signatures is absolutely legally secure and offers the same legal security as a physical signature on a paper document.
How does eSign work from a user perspective?
Digitally signing contracts via IDnow eSign is a faster and easier way for users to sign a document. The user checks the document to be signed online. Then, the user verifies his/her identity with the help of his/her identity document, for instance a personal identity card. This uses the established video identification. The contract can be signed with the personal signature with a click of the mouse or a tap of the touchscreen, upon request. The entire process takes less than 5 minutes and the user is guided through the entire process by an IDnow employee. In the end, both contract parties receive the digitally signed document as a signed PDF.
Is IDnow eSign legally secure in the European Union?
Yes. IDnow offers the highest standard of security, the qualified electronic signature (QES). The QES offers the same legal security throughout Europe as a physical signature on a paper document.
Can the IDnow eSign solution be used for contracts with a written form requirement?
Yes. Using the qualified electronic signature (QES), IDnow eSign can also be used to electronically sign contracts which require the written form. This pertains, for instance, to credit agreements, rental agreements or powers of attorney.
What is the difference between the qualified electronic signature (QES) and the advanced electronic signature (AES)?
Both procedures are options for signing documents online. The difference between the two procedures is in the details:
|Advanced Electronic Signature (AES)||Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)|
|Process for signing a document online||X||X|
|Signatory is being identified within the process||X||X|
|The identification process is officially certified||X|
|The process will be recognised as evidence by court||X||X|
|In case of doubt the proof of burden shifts. That means the court accepts esigning. If the signatory wants to challenge the signature, he bears the burden of proof that the signature is invalid||X|
|The process can be used for signing documents that require the written form||X|
|According to the EU regulation eIDAS the process has to be accepted by all members of the European Union||X|
|The process is being offered by IDnow||X||X|
Does IDnow eSign support the qualified electronic signature (QES) or the advanced electronic signature (AES)?
Yes, both. IDnow eSign supports both the qualified electronic signature (QES) and the advanced electronic signature (AES).
Does the customer need special hardware, such as a card reader, in order to use IDnow?
No. IDnow is the first Europe-wide procedure that offers the qualified electronic signature (QES) without a card reader or other special hardware in combination with video-ident. Only a conventional computer, smartphone or tablet is required to use IDnow eSign. It is therefore possible for every end user to sign documents via digital signature.
Do contracts also have to printed out and signed?
No. The electronically signed contract is sufficient as a PDF and can be used before a court in the same manner as a paper contract with a physical signature.
Does identification using the eSign solution also fulfill the requirements in accordance with the Money Laundering Act (GWG)?
Yes. The user is legitimized via video identification as part of the eSign solution. This identification process is performed in accordance with BaFin circular 1/2014, and therefore fulfills the identification obligations in accordance with §4 of the Money Laundering Act (GWG).
What is the EU Directive “Electronic Identification and Trust Services (eIDAS)”?
The European Union eIDAS or eIDAS-VO directive regulates the use of electronic signatures in EU-wide trade. It takes effect throughout the EU in mid-2016.
Is IDnow eSign also legally valid after the EU eIDAS directive takes effect?
Yes. IDnow eSign with the QES issued by our cooperation partner DocuSign has already been designed in accordance with all of the eIDAS requirements, and fulfills the requirements for the qualified electronic signature (QES) in accordance with eIDAS.
